Sending money to India via Western Union Money Transfer? This is a fast and convenient way of transferring money to India. You can send money to India in minutes, even if you and / or your beneficiary don’t have bank accounts.

This checklist will help you to send money to India through Western Union:

The basics

  1. You can make money transfers to India in cash from thousands of Western Union locations all over the world.
  2. You can use your credit / debit card to make a money transfer to India over the phone from USA and Canada.
  3. You can use your credit / debit card to send money online from select countries.
  4. After you have made a transfer, you will get a Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN). You can pass on details of the transfer and the MTCN to your beneficiary in India.
  5. Your beneficiary in India can collect cash from an agent location or a check / demand draft can be delivered at his / her home through courier.
  6. Your beneficiary will have to provide the MTCN and valid identification to get the money.
  7. You can use the MTCN to track the status of your money transfer online and can also speak to a customer service representative.

How to send money from Western Union Money Transfer locations

  1. Use the online agent locator to find an agent near you.
  2. Visit the agent location and fill out the form.
  3. Hand over the form and show valid identification issued by the government.
  4. Hand over the money including fees to the agent.
  5. Collect the receipt, which includes the Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN).


How to send money over the phone from USA and Canada

  1. You can call up the toll-free number and speak to the customer service representative in English, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Konkani, Malayalam, Punjabi, or Gujarati.
  2. The customer service representative will help you to transfer money from your MasterCard®, Visa®, or Discover® credit / debit card.
  3. If you use a credit card, you may have to pay an extra fee to your credit card issuer.
  4. Write down the MTCN and pass it on to your beneficiary. The MTCN will be needed to collect the funds.


Transfer money to India online

  1. You can use your MasterCard® or Visa® credit / debit card to send money online from select countries.
  2. Enter the name, city, and state of your receiver, with the amount.
  3. Sign in if you are an existing user or register if you are a new user.
  4. Choose additional services, such as: deliver the funds to a certain address, inform the beneficiary by phone that the money has been sent, or include a message.
  5. Review your order and make changes where necessary.
  6. Enter your credit / debit card information and submit your order.
  7. Save the receipt, which contains the MTCN, and send the details to your beneficiary.
  8. Call up the Western Union phone number provided on the receipt to confirm your transaction. This is an additional safety measure.


Receiving money in India

  1. Your beneficiary can collect the money and receipt from any one of the thousands of agent locations all over India. You can also opt to have a check or demand draft delivered at your beneficiary’s home through courier.
  2. Your beneficiary will have to fill out the ‘Receive Money’ form, and to provide the Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) along with valid photo identification.
  3. If a check or draft is delivered at your beneficiary’s home, a photocopy of the photo ID document will be collected by the courier service.
